How does standards mapping work?
1. Define the assessment scope
Identify the site, entity or facility being assessed. Record the commodity, activities, operating stage and jurisdictions. A corporate policy may apply across a group, while implementation evidence often belongs to a specific site.
2. Select the source and target frameworks
The source may be an internal framework or a standard already in use. The target is the framework the company wants to assess next. Record the exact version and publication date of both.
3. Compare individual requirements
Theme-level comparison provides orientation. Requirement-level comparison is needed to find differences that sit inside a common subject.
4. Compare scope, intent and expected outcomes
Check whether the requirements address the same subject, apply to the same operations and expect comparable action or performance. This reflects the approach used in the Copper Mark and RMI benchmark.
5. Connect relevant evidence
Link policies, procedures, audit reports, monitoring records and other sources that may support the requirement. Retain the document date, site, owner and relevant passage.
6. Classify the proposed relationship
Record a potential full match, potential partial match, gap, not applicable result or need for review. Explain the basis of the proposal so that a reviewer can challenge it.
7. Separate evidence gaps from operational gaps
An evidence gap means the available record does not demonstrate the activity. An operational gap means the required control, process or result is absent. They require different corrective actions.
8. Confirm what the target scheme accepts
An internal mapping cannot decide formal recognition. Check the rules of the target scheme and, where relevant, obtain confirmation from the scheme owner, certification body or approved assessor.
9. Maintain the mapping
Review results when a standard, internal framework or source document changes. A mapping remains tied to the versions and evidence on which it was based.

How does mapping support certification readiness?
Certification preparation often begins with a new self-assessment. Mapping changes the starting point by testing the target requirements against work and evidence the company already holds.
It can provide an earlier view of:
- requirements for which relevant evidence already exists;
- requirements that need stronger or more specific evidence;
- requirements that require operational action.
